Symptoms that You May Be Pregnant with Twins
When you find that you are pregnant, there are many things that you begin looking forward to…hearing the heartbeat for the first time, feeling your baby move and seeing the first ultrasound.
However, for many women, especially those who have twins in their family, learning just how many babies they are going to be having is another aspect of pregnancy.
Having multiple babies can be a daunting task, but many parents are excited about the potential of multiple children and know that twins often share a special bond throughout their lives.
If there is a potential that you may be having twins, learning the symptoms that you can expect is something that you need to look into. For women in this circumstance, the following symptoms are all signs that you may become a proud parent of two once you give birth.
1. Keep track of your HcG Level
Doctors will sometimes keep track of a woman’s HcG level throughout the course of her pregnancy. After the first ten days of a pregnancy, these levels will rise rapidly in women and will finally start to level out around ten weeks after they first become pregnant.
Many have found that their HcG levels rise more when they are pregnant with twins rather than if they are only pregnant with one child. However, this is not always the case and many times HcG levels for twins fall in the normal range. With this in mind, other areas will also need to be monitored in order to determine if twins are present.
2. Multiple Fetal Heart Sounds
Often the first sign that women see that they may be pregnant with twins is when their doctor detects multiple fetal heart sounds late in the first trimester. By using what is called a Doppler System, these heartbeats are amplified so that parents and doctors can hear them early in a woman’s pregnancy. However, an additional heartbeat may be heard due to background noise so this method is also not as accurate as some would hope.
3. Extreme Morning Sickness
Many women who have found they are pregnant with twins experience extreme morning sickness early on in their pregnancies. Although studies have shown that this happens in only about 15% of women who are pregnant with twins, severe morning sickness is definitely something that you should talk over with your doctor in order to determine if you are having twins.
4. Weight Gain
Weight gain can also be a sign that a woman is pregnant with twins. Typically a mother of twins gains about ten additional pounds over a normal pregnancy and she will measure larger as well.
Nevertheless, since weight gain varies from one pregnancy to the next, exceptional weight gain can be caused by a number of factors, including a woman’s weight prior to getting pregnant, her size or the type of food that she eats while she is pregnant.
During the second trimester, a blood test, called an AFP screening, is performed. This blood test often tests high for women who are pregnant with multiple babies. The next step after an AFP screening registers high or positive is to schedule an ultrasound. It will be at this time that doctors will be able to confirm that you are indeed pregnant with twins.
5. Early Babie’s Movement
Also, many women who are pregnant with twins find that they can feel their babies’ movement sooner in the pregnancy than women who are pregnant with only one child. However, this symptom is debated between doctors because women begin feeling their babies move at various times during their pregnancies.
Even women who have been pregnant before may experience movement later or sooner than they had in the past. Finding that you are pregnant with twins can be an extremely exciting and scary time during a pregnancy.
If you have twins in your family already, this thought has probably already entered your mind, but more than likely you are still a bit surprised by the news. Having multiple babies can be stressful, but once you hold your bundles for the first time, the stress will all be worth it.
As with any pregnancy, it is important that you take care of yourself while you are pregnant with twins. Remember that instead of eating for two, you are now eating for three. You will need to be able to provide the proper vitamins and nutrients to both babies, so it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. By maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, you will be able to keep your babies both happy and healthy as they grow through the pregnancy.
