Fetal Distress During Braxton Hicks
Anything that causes the flow of oxygen to be disrupted can cause fetal distress in an unborn baby. Fetal distress is caused when the baby is not receiving the amount of oxygen that it needs. This can affect the rate of the baby’s heart and cause many issues for the baby.
One of the most common times that fetal distress is discovered is during the delivery process. Monitors will pick up a change in the baby’s heart rate at this time. The heart rate will usually decrease when a contraction takes place as well if the baby is in distress.
Braxton hicks are not labor contractions, but they are contractions of the muscles around the baby. These contractions are caused as the body is preparing for the delivery process. These are also contractions that can result in fetal distress if the baby is not receiving the right amount of oxygen.
If the baby is in distress, it is common for doctors to suggest delivering the baby immediately. This is usually completed with a c-section and can help protect the health of the baby. If the baby is not delivered quickly, the loss of oxygen could lead to mental handicaps or even death.
