Meconium is the stool that is produced by a baby before it is delivered. It is something that can cause problems with the baby if it finds its way into the amniotic fluid, where it can be inhaled by the baby.

This substance consists of the items that the baby digested before it was born. This could be things like epithelial cells, mucus, amniotic fluid, water and bile. One of the problems that this can cause is that the baby could inhale it before, during or after the delivery process.

When this is the case, there is a chance that the baby could have trouble breathing. Most cases of this, the baby is completely healthy after being treated, but this is not always the case. Sometimes, serious infections or even death can occur.

Sometimes, further treatment will be necessary after they have removed all of the meconium.

The actual treatment process will depend a great deal on the conditions that the mother has that can affect her amniotic fluid as well as the amount of meconium that the baby is believed to have inhaled.
