If you have been considering taking fertility drugs, then you probably already know that one of the risks of taking them is having twins. However, some women, especially those who want multiple children and are a little bit older, find that having twins is a great thing. In fact, many of these women are actually looking for ways to get pregnant with twins.

Although there is no guarantee that you will have twins, just as there is no guarantee that you will get pregnant in the first place, there are steps that you can take to improve your chances. We already know that certain types of fertility drugs help raise those chances, but which ones are the best to take if you are looking to have twins?

1. Clomid

The most commonly prescribed fertility drug is Clomid. Women take this pill monthly in the hopes that their ovulation will become regular and their chances of getting pregnant will rise. What many do not realize is that Clomid can actually encourage your body to release two eggs and that the chances of you getting pregnant with twins now increases from 5% to 12%.

2. Pergonal

Pergonal is also another drug that is commonly associated with multiple births. This is an injectable prescription that can be used to increase fertility in women. Usually, this method is prescribed to women who have already tried Clomid and have not had success with the oral medicine.

3. Other forms of fertility treatment

Other forms of fertility treatment can also affect your odds of getting pregnant with twins. IVF, for example, raises your odds of getting pregnant from 20% to 40% while GIFT and ZIFT also raise those odds. In fact, there is currently only one fertility treatment that does not increase the chances of becoming pregnant with twins and that is IUI. With this method, sperm is injected directly into the woman’s uterus.

There are also some natural things that you can do to increase your chances of getting pregnant with twins. Some foods have been shown to increase your chances of having a multiple birth pregnancy and there are over the counter supplements that have also been known to increase your chances of having twins as well.

4. Family history and age

However, one of the most contributing factors to having twins is being a twin yourself or being from a family that has many twins in the family line. The trait of becoming pregnant with twins is passed down from one twin to the next so this increases your chances dramatically.

Another item that has been shown to improve your chances of having twins is your age. Many women who wait until later in their lives to become pregnant have a greater chance of having a multiple birth pregnancy.

5. Risk factors of multiple pregnancy

It is important to realize that having multiple births does not come without its risk factors. Women who are pregnant with twins have a great chance of complications during pregnancy and many have reported pregnancy symptoms that are more extreme than with a regular pregnancy. You will also be tasked with caring for two newborns at the same time rather than just one as with a normal pregnancy.

Although having twins is pretty much the luck of the draw, there are some things that you can do to increase your chances of having them. You should talk to your doctor about your chances and to be certain that any medical conditions that you may have will not prevent you from carrying twins safely.

6. If you don’t get pregnant with twins…

Finally, if you want to have twins and only wind up becoming pregnant with one baby, try not to be too disappointed. It may be a good idea to try to become pregnant immediately after you give birth. Although this is not the same as having twins, you will at least have two small children about the same age. However, you should follow your doctor’s instructions if you decide to try this for yourself.

The instances of twins are rising rapidly in this country and there are now more twins than ever before. One contributing factor to this trend could be the fact that women are now waiting until later in life to become pregnant. However, if you want to have twins at a younger age or want to improve your chances overall, you may find that fertility drugs can help you to become pregnant with twins.
